Suspected Dumping of Fentanyl Triggers Hazmat Response in Orange

Two suspects who dumped fentanyl during a traffic stop Tuesday in Orange triggered a hazardous materials alert and sent the suspects and six officers to area hospitals to be checked out, police said.
Police stopped a car about 2:30 p.m. in the 800 block of North Tustin Street, said Sgt. Phil McMullin of the Orange Police Department.
“When they were getting the suspects out of the car, one of the men tore open a plastic bag and dumped fentanyl,” a powerful opioid pain medication that is sometimes abused for its heroinlike effect.
Some of the drug spilled in the car and some on the ground, as well as on the shoes and pants of the officers and suspects, the sergeant said.
The fire department’s hazardous materials unit and Health Care Agency personnel were summoned to handle the substance, and the officers and suspects were taken to area hospitals as a precaution, McMullin said.
The suspects, who were not immediately identified, were arrested on suspicion of possession of narcotics and destruction of evidence, he said.
It was not immediately known why the suspects were pulled over.
