Felon Sentenced to More Than 30 years For String of Coachella Valley Robberies

An ex-con was sentenced Tuesday to more than 30 years in state prison for perpetrating a string of robberies in the Coachella Valley.

Javier Taylor, 36, was arrested following a nearly 20-minute vehicle chase that began at the scene of a robbery reported around 8:30 p.m. Oct. 25, 2018, at a business in the 72400 block of Ramon Road in Thousand Palms.

He was arrested with his co-defendant, Guillermina Delara, 49, who acted as the getaway driver, after she stopped the car near Vargas Road and Capricorn Avenue in Indio and surrendered.

The pair participated in robberies in Coachella, Indio, Thousand Palms and La Quinta in October 2018, according to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department.

Riverside County Superior Court Judge Dean Benjamini handed down a 30-year, four-month sentence for Taylor, who pleaded guilty earlier this month to 18 robbery counts, an attempted robbery charge and one count each of being a convicted felon in possession of a gun and of ammunition.

Delara previously pleaded guilty to being an accessory after the fact, evading arrest and a misdemeanor charge for possessing a controlled substance. She was sentenced to three years in state prison and one year in county jail for her part in the crimes.

A declaration in support of increased bail prepared by a Riverside County sheriff’s investigator said the last robbery occurred while Taylor was under surveillance. He made off with cash and got into a vehicle driven by Delara, who led police on a chase onto Interstate 10 and onto streets in Indio prior to their arrest.

Taylor has previous felony convictions including possessing a controlled substance, petty theft with a prior felony conviction and receiving stolen property.

Delara has previous felony convictions for petty theft and petty theft with a prior felony conviction.
