Orange County Congressman Praises High Court Ruling on Dreamers

by Contributing Editor

Democratic Orange County Congressman Lou Correa Thursday praised the U.S. Supreme Court for acting as “America’s conscience” in rejecting President Donald Trump’s plan to dismantle the Obama-era program that protects some 800,000 Latino immigrants brought illegally as children from deportation.

With Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. leading the majority, the court ruled 5-4 against the administration Wednesday. It called the decision to cancel the program known as Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, or DACA, arbitrary and not justified. The program allows these young people to register with the government and obtain a work permit if they have clean records.

At least 27,000 of these DACA recipients are employed as healthcare workers, the Los Angeles Times reported.

“Dreamers have earned the right to the American Dream,” Correa said in a statement. “They follow the law, contribute to our economy, pay taxes, and many are doctors, nurses, police officers, firefighter, and serve in our military. Our community in North Orange County is home to the largest number of Dreamers in America.”

Correa said the ruling placed the Supreme Court “on the right side of the law and history. They truly are an independent body and America’s conscience, just as the founders intended.

“The U.S. Supreme Court has recognized that our nation is stronger and better with these new Americans. Thursday, the Supreme Court has assured the more than 800,000 DACA recipients will continue to contribute to our great country. Thursday, commonsense prevailed.”

Correa represents California’s 46th Congressional District, serves as Chair of the House Homeland Security Subcommittee on Transportation and Maritime Security, and Vice Chair of the House Judiciary Subcommittee on Courts, Intellectual Property, and the Internet.
