by Contributing Editor

A 33-year-old Indio man accused of possessing assault rifles and two kilograms of heroin was being held Thursday on $200,000 bail.

Daniel Granados Vargas was arrested Wednesday and booked at the Smith Correctional Facility in Banning on suspicion of possessing an assault weapon, possessing a controlled substance with a firearm and selling or transporting a controlled substance, according to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department.

The arrest stemmed from a shooting investigation in Coachella that began in April.

Deputies served a search warrant in the 80800 block of Boulder Avenue in Indio Wednesday in connection with the investigation.

At the house, deputies reported finding multiple semi-automatic rifles, a shotgun, two kilograms of heroin, ammo and cash, leading to Vargas’ arrest, although it remains unclear if any of alleged crimes were connected to the original shooting investigation.

Vargas has no documented felony convictions in Riverside County.

According to jail records, Vargas is scheduled to appear at the Larson Justice Center in Indio on Friday.
