A suspect who police said pulled a gun on officers was hospitalized in stable condition Saturday morning with injuries suffered in an officer-involved shooting in the Vermont Square area of South Los Angeles, and a gun was recovered at the scene.
Officers with 77th Area Gang Enforcement walked up to a large group of people drinking in public at Vermont Square Park, in the 4700 block of Budlong Avenue, near 47th Street, at 9:45 p.m. Friday and as the officers approached two suspects who appeared to be armed ran from the area, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.
Officers chased the suspects and followed one into the courtyard of an apartment building where the suspect pulled a gun and an officer-involved shooting occurred, the LAPD said.
The suspect was taken into custody and treated on scene by officers until Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics arrived and took the wounded man to a hospital, where he was hospitalized in stable condition, police said.
A handgun was recovered at the scene, the LAPD said.
No officers or bystanders were injured.
The name of the suspect was not released.
It was unclear whether the second suspect who ran from the location was taken into custody.
