Boxers from LAPD and United Kingdom Weigh-in Ahead of Charity Matches

by Contributing Editor

In advance of a charity boxing match between teams from the Los Angeles Police Department and West Midlands Police Force from the United Kingdom featuring a first-time ever fight between female officers, both teams will conduct weigh-ins Friday morning outside LAPD headquarters.

Weigh-ins are scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. near the Memorial Wall, the LAPD said.

The highlight of Saturday’s show will be a matchup between LAPD Foothill Gangs Officer Deirdre Fonseca and Officer Clare Hankinson from West Midlands, the police department said.

Fonseca, 31, stands 5 feet 2 inches, weighs 128 pounds and is known as “Sugar” Dre. Hankinson is 5 feet 7 and is expected to weigh about 10 pounds more than Fonseca, LAPD Boxing Coach Officer John Negrete told ABC7.

The boxing matches are scheduled for 5 p.m. Saturday at Montebello Quiet Cannon at 901 Via San Clemente, and both teams will join with the Los Angeles Police Protective League to donate funds raised from the event to the Officer Down Foundation, police said.

“Both law enforcement agencies are pleased to show the media and members of our communities that law enforcement agencies are willing to travel across the pond to do a lot more than just respond to calls for service,” the LAPD said in a statement. “The law enforcement community is willing to lace up boxing gloves and go toe-to-toe to fundraise for worthy causes in support of the law enforcement community.”
