Police Say Theft Suspect Accidentally Run Over and Killed While Fleeing

A suspected thief died at a hospital after he tripped and fell into the path of the theft victim’s vehicle while being pursued, Riverside police reported Friday.

Around 9:25 p.m. Thursday, a 39-year-old man living in an apartment complex at Jackson Street and Hendry Avenue discovered his vehicle had been broken into and began looking around the area for a possible culprit, according to Riverside police Sgt. Erich Feimer.

In the process, he confronted a 35-year-old man who was standing at the intersection of Andrew and Jackson streets, and fled on foot northbound on Jackson Street on the west sidewalk while discarding property, the sergeant said.

The property was later determined to belong to the theft victim, he said.

The man continued to run and, when just south of Hendry Avenue, tripped and fell into the path of the 2014 Mitsubishi Outlander being driven by the theft victim, according to Feimer.

Police did not say if the suspected thief was running on the sidewalk or the street when he was hit by the vehicle.

The man, who was not identified, died at Riverside Community Hospital.

Feimer said the driver of the Outlander, whose name was withheld, was uninjured and was cooperating with authorities.

Police do not believe drugs or alcohol were factors, and no arrests have been made.
