PACOIMA — The passenger of a suspected 25-year-old drunk driver was killed Saturday when the driver crashed a van into a guardrail on a freeway transition road in Pacoima.
Jorge Martin Martinez was driving a 2012 GMC cargo van southbound on the Golden State (5) Freeway to the transition road to the westbound Hollywood (170) Freeway at an unknown speed, when he drove off the road and into the guardrail, within the “gore point” — or triangular piece of land — of the transition road, the California Highway Patrol said.
The crash occurred at 2:35 a.m., according to the CHP.
Officers who arrived at the scene found a white van that had crashed into a guardrail and one person trapped inside the van, which was facing the wrong way, the CHP said.
Paramedics rushed Martinez and his unidentified passenger to Providence Holy Cross Medical Center-Mission Hills, where the passenger was pronounced dead and Martinez, of Los Angeles, was listed with minor injuries.
Alcohol was a suspected factor in the crash, the CHP said.
The CHP’s Altadena office urged anyone with information regarding the crash to call them at 626-296-8100.
