Sherman Oaks attorney fatally shot in Laguna Beach condominium may have been targeted

by Eric Licas

Investigators suspect an attorney based out of Sherman Oaks found fatally shot early Tuesday, July 28, at a condominium in Laguna Beach was specifically targeted by whoever killed him.

A resident of the Laguna Lido Condominiums at 31755 Coast Highway called 911 and reported hearing the sound of glass breaking, then gunshots at about 5:19 a.m., Laguna Beach Police Department officials said in a news release. Officers responded, and found a man inside a second-floor unit with a shattered window who had been shot.

Paramedics were summoned, but the victim died before they could arrive, police said. He was later identified as 46-year-old Barret Adin Slome, Orange County Deputy Coroner Kelly Keyes said. He was killed in a residence that belonged to his father, Laguna Beach Police Sgt. Jim Cota said.

“This is the first homicide in Laguna Beach since August 2019,” police said in a statement.

Investigators do not believe the shooting was a random act or crime of opportunity, Cota said. The condominium where it took place is on the second floor of the building and surrounded by gates and fencing. Evidence does not suggest that the suspect was invited onto the property, and it would have taken considerable effort to get inside.

“You couldn’t just walk in there,” Cota said. “You’d have to climb your way in.”

Police did not immediately suggest a motive for the shooting. Some items appeared to be missing from the condominium, but it was unclear if they were stolen or misplaced, Cota said.

According to the State Bar of California, Slome was placed on probation and his license was suspended for 30 days in May 2019 after he was convicted of the unlawful possession of cannabis for sale.

Bar records show that charge was brought forth after Slome was shot six times as the victim of a home invasion robbery in 2017 in Los Angeles. Officers responding to the incident found bullet holes, blood-stained walls and shattered glass, along with $19,429 cash and about 350 pounds of marijuana. Slome was hospitalized for two months, and later pleaded no contest to the misdemeanor offense in May 2018.

It’s unclear if his death had anything to do with the earlier robbery, Cota said.

A detailed description of any possible suspect was not available, and further details were not immediately shared with the public. Authorities asked anyone with information that might aid investigators to call Laguna Beach Police Det. Drake at 949-497-0767, or Det. Butterfield at 949-497-0373.
