A 75-year-old man was struck and killed while trying to cross an intersection at a crosswalk in Menifee, authorities said Thursday.
Menifee police Capt. Chris Karrer said the victim, whose name was not immediately released, was walking north on Laguna Vista Drive within the marked crossing when a motorist headed west on Rockport Road hit him about 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.
Karrer said the driver had yielded for a stop sign but did not see the senior step into the roadway until it was too late.
“The pedestrian was knocked to the ground and sustained severe head trauma,” the captain said.
The 59-year-old motorist, a Menifee resident whose name was withheld, pulled over and called 911.
Riverside County Fire Department paramedics reached the scene within a few minutes and took the victim to Inland Valley Medical Center in Wildomar, but he died shortly after arrival, according to Karrer.
“The primary cause of the collision is still under investigation, but there is no suspected alcohol or drugs involved,” he said.
Anyone with information was asked to contact the police department at 951-723-1690.
