by Contributing Editor

A Coachella man allegedly opened fire early Thursday morning on a group of bicyclists, who escaped injury, before being taken into custody, authorities said.

The gunfire was reported about 12:45 a.m. in the 52000 block of Calle Camacho.

Eduardo Gonzalez, 33, was arrested about an hour later on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon and multiple firearm misdemeanors, with bail set at $50,000, according to Riverside County Sheriff’s Department Sgt. William Fiebig.

According to Fiebig, Gonzalez allegedly drove up to a group of people who were riding bicycles, exited his vehicle and opened fire. A motive was unknown.

Sheriff’s deputies located Gonzalez and his vehicle on Calle Camacho and found three loaded handguns when they searched it, according to Fiebig.

Gonzalez is expected to make his initial court appearance at the Larson Justice Center in Indio as soon as Monday.
