A convicted felon accused of threatening a 14-year-old Moreno Valley boy with a knife and stealing his belongings pleaded not guilty Thursday to robbery and gang activity charges.

Igor Ivan Borroel, 24, was arrested Monday following a weeks-long Riverside County sheriff’s investigation into the alleged holdup in the 24000 block of JFK Drive, near Heacock Street.

Borroel was arraigned before Superior Court Judge O.G. Magno, who scheduled a felony settlement conference for July 14 at the Riverside Hall of Justice. The defendant is being held in lieu of $1 million bail at the Robert Presley Jail in Riverside.

According to sheriff’s Sgt. Ryan Marcuse, the teen was walking on JFK when he was confronted about 7:20 a.m. on June 4.

“The suspect brandished a knife and took several items of property from the victim by force,” then fled the scene, Marcuse said.

The boy, whose name was withheld, was not injured. He reported the encounter to deputies who began working the case soon after, speaking with area merchants and gathering other evidence that ultimately pointed to Borroel as the alleged perpetrator, according to the sergeant.

About 12:30 p.m. Monday, deputies spotted the ex-con in the area of Brodiaea Avenue and Heacock, where he was taken into custody without a struggle.

According to court records, Borroel has prior convictions for making criminal threats while on bail, armed robbery and identity theft.
