A 26-year-old homeless man who was fatally struck in an apparent suicide by an Amtrak train in Santa Ana was identified Monday by the Orange County coroner’s office.
The crash that claimed the life of Theodore Contreras took place near the Lyons Street crossing between Orange and Tustin about 3:50 p.m. Sunday, according to Metrolink spokesman Paul Gonzales and the coroner’s office.
“At this point in the investigation, it appears to be a suicide,” said Santa Ana police spokesman Anthony Bertagna.
The southbound Amtrak train 580, which struck Contreras, was temporarily stopped at the scene and Metrolink arranged for buses to move the passengers.
No one on the train was injured, Gonzales said.
Riders on Amtrak train 858, which was headed northbound when the crash happened, also were held up while the investigation continued, and riders could redeem a ride share voucher worth up to $50 at metrolinktrains.com/ubervouchers, Gonzales said.
