Man Killed in Possibly Gang-Related Shooting in Huntington Park

by Contributing Editor

The shooter who killed a man in his 40s and wounded a man in his 20s in Huntington Park was on the loose Saturday morning.

The shooting, the city’s second fatal shooting in just over 24 hours, occurred in the 6000 block of Templeton Street, near the intersection of Soto Street and Belgrave Avenue, at 3:45 p.m. Friday, according to Deputy Marvin Crowder of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, which is assisting Huntington Park police with the investigation.

The man in his 40s was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead. The second victim was treated at the scene for minor injuries and released, Crowder said. Their names were not released.

Authorities were searching for a male suspect, according to Sgt. Joe Settles of the Huntington Park Police Department. The suspect’s name is not known, Settles said.

A description of the shooter was not available and the gun used remained outstanding, Crowder said.

Another fatal shooting occurred at 3:20 p.m. Thursday about a half-mile away in Huntington Park, in the 7000 block of Rita Avenue.

The victim in that shooting was identified by the Los Angeles County coroner’s office as 19-year-old Mikel Anthony Carballo.

It was not clear whether the two shootings were related. “I couldn’t even answer that, it’s still being investigated,” Huntington Park police Sgt. Richard Maretti told City News Service.

Anyone with information about either fatal shooting was encouraged to contact the sheriff’s Homicide Bureau at 323-890-5500. Those who wish to report anonymously can call 800-222-TIPS.
