Felon Charged with Robbing Banks, Burglarizing Supermarkets

A convicted felon accused of robbing the same two banks in Lake Elsinore and Murrieta twice, as well as burglarizing area grocery stores, was charged Friday with multiple armed robbery and burglary charges.

Donovan Oscar Dintelman, 47, of Canyon Lake was arrested Wednesday following a Riverside County sheriff’s investigation that began in June.

He’s being held in lieu of $500,000 bail at the Byrd Detention Center in Murrieta and is slated to make his initial court appearance Friday afternoon at the adjacent Southwest Justice Center on five counts each of armed robbery and first-degree burglary.

According to sheriff’s Sgt. Ray Ricken, the first holdup occurred on June 12 at a U.S. Bank branch in Murrieta. Over the ensuing five months, Dintelman allegedly committed additional robberies, as well as burglaries, staying within the same general area.

According to the criminal complaint against him, the defendant robbed the same U.S. Bank on June 22. He also robbed the same Chase bank branch in Lake Elsinore on June 19 and Nov. 15, prosecutors allege.

Dintelman also allegedly burglarized Albertsons, Ralphs and Stater Bros. supermarkets in Lake Elsinore, Murrieta and Wildomar over the same five-month span.

No one was injured in the holdups.

According to Ricken, detectives got a break in the case Wednesday when the defendant allegedly attempted to rob a bank in Chino Hills. His vehicle license plate was captured by security surveillance video cameras as he fled, and that information led to a search warrant being served at Dintelman’s Compass Drive home, where he was taken into custody without incident, according to the sergeant.

Court records show the defendant has prior convictions for felony evading, receiving a stolen vehicle and burglary.
