Firefighters work to douse Barham fire hot spots and smoldering debris

Smoke visible from the 34-acre Barham fire in the Hollywood Hills is originating from smoldering objects inside the containment area and is not a sign that the fire is expanding, the Los Angeles Fire Department said Sunday morning.

No new figures on acreage or containment were available as if 10 a.m., but updates will come later when a more accurate survey of the burned area is acquired, officials said.

“Crews will be working throughout the day today, tomorrow, and possibly longer,” said LAFD spokesman Nicholas Prange. “The terrain is very steep and the mop-up will be a slow methodical process to eliminate hot spots and smoldering debris. Water drops by air will continue to aid in completing this objective.”

The forward progress of the fire, which started just before 2 p.m. on Saturday, was stopped in just a few hours.

With 3 mph winds and gusts of 12 mph, the blaze. first reported at three acres, moved at a slow rate.

Some 236 LAFD ground and air personnel, supported by four Los Angeles County fire hand crews, attacked the flames in moderate to heavy brush on Saturday afternoon.

One firefighter had non-life-threatening injuries to his arm and leg and was transported to a local hospital. There were no civilian injuries.

No structures were threatened and no mandatory evacuations were ordered, but some people near the fire, about a mile from Warner Bros. Studios, Universal Studios Hollywood and the Hollywood sign, voluntarily evacuated.

By 6:20 p.m., crews were able to build containment lines around 15% of the fire.

The cause of the blaze was under investigation.
