Garden Grove Man Charged with Pointing Laser at Police Helicopter

by Contributing Editor

A 42-year-old man was charged Thursday with pointing a laser at a Huntington Beach police helicopter.

Abran Magana was charged with a count of discharging a laser at an occupied aircraft and a count of bringing or sending a controlled substance to the jail. He is accused of possessing methamphetamine in the Orange County Jail, according to court records.

Magana pleaded not guilty to the charges at his arraignment in the jail courtroom in Santa Ana Thursday, and was ordered to return to court Nov. 18 for a pretrial hearing in the West Justice Center in Westminster.

He was accused of pointing the laser at a Huntington Beach police helicopter about 8 p.m. Tuesday in the Garden Grove area, according to Garden Grove police Lt. Carl Whitney.

Police tracked down Magana next to his vehicle in front of his residence with the Huntington Beach police helicopter hovering overhead, and he admitted he had pointed the laser at the helicopter, Whitney said.

The laser was recovered from the vehicle, Whitney said.

Officials say it is dangerous to point a laser at a pilot because it can temporarily blind them.
