Police: Motorist shoots himself during alleged San Marino road rage confrontation

by Eric Licas

A driver shot himself after he was confronted by another motorist during an alleged road rage incident in San Marino on Sunday, Sept. 22, police said.

A traffic dispute between two drivers took place in the area of San Gabriel Boulevard and Duarte Road at about 8:38 a.m., San Marino Police said in a news release. A motorist in a dark-colored Mercedes-Benz pulled alongside a man who had been driving erratically in a blue Subaru, and asked him to roll his window down.

The two made contact with each other, and at some point the Subaru driver shot himself once in the torso, SMPD officials said. He was taken to a hospital and was expected to survive from his wound.

The wounded man is an Alhambra Police Department officer who was off-duty at the time, according to KTLA, which cited several sources. Officers at the San Marino and Alhambra stations declined to immediately verify that report Sunday evening.

Officers did not immediately provide further details or discus what might have been said between the two drivers. The shooting, as well as the altercation that might have led up to it, were under investigation Sunday evening.
