‘Beauty,’ a German Shepherd puppy once dragged along a Mead Valley road, has found a home

A German Shepherd puppy that fell out of a truck and was dragged along a Mead Valley road in late July had healed significantly and has now found a new home.

Beauty, the 8-month-old pup, was bandaged up and treated by Riverside County Animal Services’ veterinary team. During her recovery, she gained 10 pounds.

The announcement of Beauty’s adoption availability Thursday afternoon drew dozens of inquiries on Facebook and by phone, said John Welsh, spokesman for county animal services.

First thing Friday morning when the facility opened, Patti Byam of Hollywood showed up and she adopted Beauty.

“It is rather impossible to adopt by phone; we want you to come in person,” Welsh said.

Beauty had come to the shelter on July 29 after she was dragged by a pickup truck on Carter Drive. Animal Services said the incident was reported as an accident; residents in the area shouted at the driver of the vehicle to get her attention.

Animal Services said the woman told a Riverside County Sheriff’s Department deputy that she couldn’t hear the people trying to flag her down because she was playing loud music in the truck, and she promised that she would take the dog to a vet.

“However, for some unknown reason, the dog remained on Carter Drive and Animal Services was contacted,” the department said. The dog, with abrasions on her paws and abdomen as a result of being dragged, was taken to an emergency clinic.

The investigation into the incident remains open, authorities said.
