Chino packer recalls more than 12 tons of beef

More than 12 tons of beef from a Chino plant are being recalled as unfit for human consumption after a carcass under inspection accidentally went back into processing before its test results had returned, the U.S. Department of Agriculture reported.
The health risk is rated low, and the USDA said in a Saturday release there have been no reports of illness connected with the products, which have “EST. 34741” inside the USDA mark of inspection.
The raw beef — 24,428 pounds — was recalled by American Beef Packers in Chino. It includes cuts such as boneless beef chuck, ribeye, and sirloin, along with 50-pound boxes marked for further processing, the USDA said.

The release said the meat was shipped to “federal establishments in California and Oregon.”
Media contacts for the USDA and American Beef Packers were not immediately available Sunday to expand the description of those shipment destinations.
American Beef notified the USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service on Saturday that a carcass pending laboratory results had been accidentally released and processed, the agency said.
The agency was concerned that consumers might purchase and freeze or refrigerate the beef for later use. Anyone who bought the products should not eat them, and either throw them away or return them to where they bought the beef, the USDA said.
The recall was set as “Class II,” with a “remote probability” of illness from use of the beef.
