A 45-year-old man accused of severely beating his girlfriend and forcibly taking her car near Corona was charged Wednesday with assault resulting in great bodily injury and other offenses.

Jason Wayne Rhodes of Riverside was arrested Monday night following a Riverside County sheriff’s investigation.

Along with the assault count, Rhodes is charged with carjacking and two misdemeanor counts of domestic abuse. He pleaded not guilty during an arraignment before Superior Court Judge Jacqueline Jackson, who scheduled a felony settlement conference for Aug. 23 at the Riverside Hall of Justice.

The judge also signed a domestic violence restraining order, barring the defendant from having any contact with the victim, whose identity was not disclosed.

Rhodes is being held in lieu of $60,000 bail at the Smith Correctional Facility in Banning.

According to sheriff’s Sgt. Steve Fredericks, deputies were notified that the victim had allegedly been beaten after her co-worker at a Corona-area business spoke to her, and in turn called the sheriff’s department.

Fredericks alleged that Rhodes had spent an unspecified period of time at the woman’s residence in the 10000 block of Dawson Canyon Road, in the Temescal Valley, inflicting serious physical harm before taking her vehicle and driving it into Riverside.

Deputies tracked the defendant down on Rancho Del Oro Drive, near the Riverside (91) Freeway, where he was taken into custody without a struggle. The victim’s car was located and returned to her, according to Fredericks.

Rhodes has no documented prior felony convictions in Riverside County.
