A knife-wielding man was shot and killed by police in Beaumont after a domestic violence call.

The shooting occurred around 10 p.m. Friday in the 600 block of Michigan Avenue, near Sixth Street, according to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department. Sheriff’s detectives responded to the scene to assist Beaumont police with the investigation into the shooting.

A witness told CBS2 that a bleeding and distressed woman emerged from a home and asked her neighbors for help.

“Officers arrived and contacted a male, who exited his residence armed with two large knives. The suspect advanced toward the officers and an officer-involved shooting occurred,” said Deputy Mike Vasquez.

One witness told reporters at the scene that officers ordered the man to drop his knife several times but he refused and continued to advance, prompting the shooting.

The suspect was the woman’s husband, CBS2 reported.

He was taken to a hospital but later died of his injuries. Authorities blocked off the 600 block of Michigan Avenue for the investigation, the sheriff’s department said. The name of the suspect was not disclosed.

The officers involved in the shooting were placed on administrative leave, Vasquez said.
