Pair Sentenced for Attempted Murder in Moreno Valley

by Contributing Editor

An ex-con and his friend convicted of attacking a man near a Moreno Valley reservoir, inflicting life-threatening wounds, were sentenced Friday.

Reynaldo Antonio Caceres, 20, and Kewin Martinez Castro, 19, were both convicted of attempted murder charges, with the court also finding true a sentence-enhancing allegation that Caceres committed a felony within five years of parole from state prison.

Caceres was sentenced to 12 years to life in prison and Castro was sentenced to 17 years behind bars.

According to Riverside County Sheriff’s Deputy Joshua Hephner, about 4:30 p.m. on June 16, the victim, whose identity was not disclosed, was in a residential area near Poorman’s Reservoir when the defendants confronted him.

Caceres was wielding a knife and allegedly stabbed the young man “multiple times in the chest and abdomen,” Hephner wrote in an arrest warrant affidavit.

A motive for the attack was not specified.

Castro was allegedly with Caceres during the attack but did not use the knife, according to investigators. Both men allegedly fled the scene as witnesses called 911.

The victim was taken to Riverside University Medical Center in Moreno Valley, where he underwent emergency surgery for a lacerated liver and a major puncture wound to the chest, according to Hephner.

He said the man, who has since recovered, positively identified Caceres as the assailant.

Caceres was tracked down and arrested without incident two weeks later at his home in the 8200 block of Cherimoya Avenue. Castro was taken into custody on July 13 in west Moreno Valley.

According to court records, Caceres has prior felony convictions in another jurisdiction that were not listed. Castro has no priors.
