A 20-year-old man pleaded guilty and was immediately sentenced to two years in prison for sexually assaulting an underage girl in Irvine and then threatening to share details of the attack on social media.

Gaoyang Li of Irvine admitted one count of oral copulation of an underage girl and two counts of delivery of a threatening letter with the intent to extort, all felonies. The date of the sexual assault of the teenager, identified in the complaint as Jane Doe 1, was Sept. 10, according to court records.

He also threatened Jane Doe 1 and a second girl, identified as Jane Doe 2. Those crimes occurred on Nov. 8 and Jan. 29, according to court papers.

Li was arrested Feb. 6 and released while police continued their investigation, but they re-arrested him at Los Angeles International Airport Feb. 22 as they believed he was attempting to flee to China.

Police began investigating Li on Jan. 29, when a 16-year-old girl came forward to allege he had forced her to perform a sex act on him several months before. The day she went to police, she claimed that he had contacted her through the Chinese dating app Tan Tan, demanding money or else he would post a video of the sexual assault on social media.

The two met through the Tan Tan app on Sept. 9 and continued to talk on the WeChat app before agreeing to meet, according to police.
