A dog named Beauty who was dragged alongside a moving pickup truck in Mead Valley was on the road to recovery at an animal shelter Friday while investigators continued to search for the beast — Beauty’s uncaring woman owner.
The seven-month-old, female German shepherd suffered serious abrasions to her paws and abdomen on July 29 after apparently falling or jumping from the cargo bed of the Toyota pickup truck she was riding in, said Department of Animal Services Public Information Officer John Welsh.
The pup was dragged for approximately 30 yards along Carter Drive as residents shouted, waved and chased after the pickup truck, he said.
Riverside County sheriff’s deputies were called to the scene and confronted the driver, who said she had been listening to loud music and had not realized what had happened, according to Welsh.
The unnamed driver promised deputies that she would take the canine to receive veterinary attention, but instead the dog was left abandoned on Carter Drive for unknown reasons, Welsh said.
Beauty was then picked up by an Animal Services officer and transported to an emergency clinic and continues to be nursed back to health at the Western Riverside County Animal Shelter in Jurupa Valley.
Mead Valley is a small area about 15 miles south of the city of Riverside.
“Veterinary staffers remove her bandages each evening and treat the wounds and re-apply bandages,” Welsh said.
Even though the driver characterized the dragging incident as an accident, an Animal Services investigation remained open, according to Welsh.
He said that if Beauty’s owner can not be located, she will be available for adoption when she heals.
Animal Services officials warned that transporting animals in cargo beds can be dangerous and that pet owners should place animals inside a secured crate.
