by Contributing Editor

Police investigating reports of gunshots in Palm Springs early Friday morning arrested a man who tried to flee when they arrived.

Calls came in after midnight Friday reporting the sound of gunshots in an area near the intersection of Rosa Parks Road and El Dorado Boulevard, according to information from the Palm Springs Police Department.

Officers arriving in the area to investigate spotted a car driving nearby with its headlights turned off, police said.

When the driver noticed the officers in their patrol car, he took off, driving recklessly in an attempt to flee, according to the police department.

The suspect eventually came to a stop and was arrested without further incident.

Police found the man in possession of a firearm holster, but did not locate a weapon.

The man was identified as 30-year-old Tamayo Martinez, who is serving post-release community supervision in Palm Springs.

Police were unable to determine if Martinez was the one who fired the reported gunshots.

Martinez was taken into custody on felony charges of reckless evading and violating the terms of his supervision.

He remains held without bail at the Indio jail.
