Hemet Motel Blaze Leaves Man Seriously Injured

by Contributing Editor

A man suffered life-threatening injuries in a Hemet motel fire that he likely ignited, but the reasons why remain unclear, police said Tuesday.

Hemet police Lt. Jeff Davis said the blaze erupted Monday afternoon in a second-floor room of Motel 6 at 3885 W. Florida Ave.

Patrol officers were at the location to investigate an unrelated complaint when they were alerted to the upstairs fire, he said. The officers forced open the room from which smoke was pouring and encountered a locked bathroom door, which they also kicked open, but they retreated because of heavy smoke.

“Hemet Fire Department personnel arrived, donned appropriate protective equipment and entered the room,” Davis said. “A 58-year old male was located in the bathtub.”

The man was unresponsive, according to Davis, who said paramedics provided life-saving treatment at the scene and transported him to a hospital intensive care unit.

He said investigators determined the blaze was probably started by the victim, whose name was withheld. However, the exact ignition source and other factors are still unknown.

Anyone with information was asked to contact the police department at 951-765-2422.
