A 27-year-old jaywalker suffered fatal injuries when he was struck by a vehicle in Palmdale and an investigation was launched into whether the driver was under the influence of marijuana, authorities said Thursday.

Deputies responded to the intersection of Rancho Vista Boulevard and West Avenue O-8 about 10:20 p.m. Wednesday and located the victim, who was taken to a hospital, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

A preliminary investigation determined a 29-year-old driver in a 2012 Toyota Yaris was headed east on Rancho Vista Boulevard when he struck the pedestrian, who crossing Rancho Vista from south to East, sheriff’s Detective Eduardo Saucedo said.

“Based on the evidence, the pedestrian was crossing the street outside of the crosswalk against a solid red traffic signal,” Saucedo said.

The pedestrian was taken to Antelope Valley Hospital, where he was eventually pronounced dead, Saucedo said.

A search of the vehicle turned up marijuana, Saucedo said. A field sobriety test was conducted on the driver and a blood sample was obtained, but the results were pending. No arrests were reported.

The name of the victim was not immediately available.

The crash prompted the closure of Rancho Vista Boulevard between Avenue O-8 and Montellano Avenue until about 2 a.m.
