Public’s Help Sought Identifying Pair Who Beat Youths at MoVal Skatepark

Two boys were pummeled by two others at a Moreno Valley skatepark, and authorities Monday were asking for the public’s help in identifying the assailants.

The attack happened sometime Saturday at Community Park in the 13300 block of Frederick St., according to city officials.

Camera phone video clips that have since gone viral on social media showed the suspects, youths or young adults, punching and kicking the victims, also teenagers, for reasons unclear.

Bystanders watched but did not attempt to intervene during the videotaped assault, which ended when the victims fled the area on foot. The extent of their injuries was not known.

“This type of behavior has no place in our city,” Mayor Yxstian A. Gutierrez said. “We take great pride in our parks as safe places for our community to play and relax. To keep them safe, we ask residents to say something if they see something.”

The mother of one of the suspects, Sapphira Garey, told NBC4 that her son came to the park because his 12-year-old brother was being bullied by teens at the park.

“The video does look horrific, it does, I’m not going to lie, but at the same time it’s self-defense and anybody’s going to do it when it comers to his sister or brother,” Garey said.

According to officials, Riverside County sheriff’s deputies, who provide contract law enforcement in Moreno Valley, are using the municipality’s citywide camera system in the ongoing investigation.

Anyone with information was urged to contact the sheriff’s Moreno Valley station at 951-486-6700.
