LASD Arrests Nine Drivers at DUI Checkpoint in Compton

An eight-hour DUI checkpoint in Compton resulted in nine arrests, authorities said Saturday morning.

The checkpoint was conducted between 6 p.m. Friday and 2 a.m. Saturday on Santa Fe Avenue at Auto Drive South, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

One driver was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs and another was taken into custody on suspicion of driving under the combined influence of drugs and alcohol and seven other drivers were arrested for driving without a license or with a suspended or revoked license and three vehicles were towed, the sheriff’s department said.

“Drivers caught driving impaired and charged with DUI can expect the impact of a DUI arrest to be approximately $13,500,” the LASD said in a statement. “This includes fines, fees, DUI classes, license suspension and other expenses not to mention possible jail time.”

The sheriff’s department also warned drivers that “DUI doesn’t just mean booze,” the statement said. “Prescription drugs, particularly those with a driving or operating machinery warning on the label, can impair and result in a DUI. Marijuana can also be impairing, especially in combination with alcohol or other drugs.”

In 2018, the LASD investigated 395 DUI crashes that killed 21 people and injured 590 others.
