Federal prosecutors charged 22 members of MS-13 on Tuesday for plotting and committing a number of murders in the Los Angeles area, including a series of killings in the Angeles National Forest where the suspects are accused of using machetes to kill and dismember their rivals.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office released the indictment against the gang members Tuesday morning, detailing violent activities it blames on the notorious gang that include at least seven murders in the last two years as well as attempted murders, drug trafficking and extortion of rival gang members and innocent businesses alike.

Among the indictment’s allegations: One of these cliques operated at Whitsett Sports Park in Valley Glen.

The park was the location of the Jan. 14 murder of a homeless man, who Los Angeles Police Department detectives identified as a member of a gang. The victim, 34-year-old Bradley Hanaway, was sleeping when three men came up to him, authorities say, then shot him to death.

According to the indictment, members of the Fulton clique of MS-13 were involved in that murder. It also was involved in a number of assaults at the park, authorities said, that were part of a campaign to establish control of the area.

Members of the Fulton clique also operated in a nearby river wash, where they sold drugs and plotted their activities, according to the indictment. At least one shooting was committed there.

Two of the men arrested in the January murder of Hanaway were named in Tuesday’s indictment. A third man was arrested in the murder, an LAPD detective said, but he has so far not been named in either murder charge or the indictment.

This is a developing story. Please check back for updates.
