Riverside Brush Fire Threatens Mobile Home Park; Firefighter Injured

A brush fire in Riverside burned five acres of vegetation, destroyed one mobile home, caused $200,000 in damage and caused one firefighter to suffer heat-related illness, authorities said Monday.
The fire was reported at 6:16 p.m. Sunday in the 4500 block of Van Buren Boulevard, said Riverside Fire Department Battalion Chief Scott Wilson.
The fire had burned about one-quarter acre when firefighters arrived and they called for reinforcements because the flames had spread into a large group of untrimmed palm trees and into a mobile home park, Wilson said.
“There were dozens of mobile homes, standard structures, and recreational vehicles threatened throughout the fire area,” he said.
It took 90 minutes to put out the flames, he said. The fire spread to five acres.
The flames destroyed one mobile home and caused moderate damage to one and minor damage to four others, Wilson said.
“During the firefighting operation a firefighter was overcome by a heat-related illness and transported to a local hospital for treatment,” Wilson said. “The firefighter was released from the hospital and is home resting with a full recovery expected.”
The cause was under investigation, he said. Loss was estimated at $200,000.
