The Long Beach Police Department announced Friday that Cmdr. Robert Smith, a 30-year veteran of the department, has been named deputy chief and will lead the Support Bureau, which includes the jail, training, port police and security services divisions.
Smith started as a police officer at the Long Beach Police Department in 1990, and since then has amassed “extensive experience” in patrol, community policing, drug enforcement and the Special Enforcement Section, according to a LBPD statement. He’s also worked as the commander of the Internal Affairs, West Patrol, and Gang and Violent Crimes divisions.
“Collaboration is critical to achieving our shared goals, and I am excited for the opportunity to build upon existing relationships with our community members, city departments and our contract service partners,” Smith said. “I look forward to working with the great employees in the Support Bureau, and throughout the department, to continue providing exceptional service to the city of Long Beach.”
