An assault suspect allegedly wielding a pipe or large metal pole was arrested by police Monday in the Miracle Mile area, with both the suspect and an officer hospitalized with unspecified injuries.
Officers responded to the area of Wilshire Boulevard and La Brea Avenue shortly before noon, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.
Police said no shots were fired in the arrest, but reports from the scene indicated that officers may have deployed a stun gun and possibly bean-bag rounds to subdue the suspect, a man about 50 years old.
A witness at the scene told KNX Newsradio the suspect was a homeless man holding a pipe or large metal street-sign-type pole and confronting people in the area.
The suspect’s name was not immediately released.
Paramedics took the suspect and an officer to a hospital for treatment of unspecified injuries.
Traffic was routed away from the area and a stretch of Wilshire was closed while an investigation was conducted.
According to Metro, buses on line 212 were being detoured via Rossmore Avenue between Third Street and Wilshire Boulevard until late afternoon due to the police activity.
