Woman Shot in Santa Ana Dies at Hospital

A young woman who was shot in a car parked in a Santa Ana alley in an apparent gang-related attack died a short time later at a hospital, and her killer was at large Thursday, police said.

Officers sent to the 2100 block of West Myrtle Street about 9:35 p.m. Wednesday on a report of a shooting found signs that a crime had occurred, but no victim, police said.

About five minutes later, a group of people arrived at an area hospital with a woman in her 20s who had suffered a gunshot wound, said Santa Ana police Cpl. Anthony Bertagna.

The victim was brought into the hospital, but life-saving measures failed and she was declared dead at 9:46 p.m., Bertagna said.

Detectives determined the gunman approached the car where the victim was seated with several others and opened fire, Bertagna said. Police suspect some of the victim’s friends had gang affiliations, he said.

Authorities withheld the woman’s name, pending notification of her relatives.

Anyone with information on the case was urged to call homicide detectives at 714-245-8390, or Orange County Crime Stoppers at 855-TIP-OCCS.
