Girl, 5, Shot Inside South L.A Home, Hospitalized

by Contributing Editor

A 5-year-old girl was hospitalized in very serious condition Thursday morning with a gunshot wound she suffered inside a South Los Angeles home, and authorities were working to determine if a crime occurred.

Police responded to a residence near the intersection of 41st Place and Woodlawn Avenue about 5:30 p.m. Wednesday and found the child suffering from a gunshot wound, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

Paramedics performed a “scoop and run” and rushed the girl to a hospital with an escort from the LAPD.

“My understanding is that she’s in very serious condition,” LAPD Lt. Raul Jovel told KCAL9 Wednesday night. “I don’t know if she’s been downgraded, if she’s still critical or not critical. I know she’s still being treated in the emergency room.”

Authorities told Fox11 that someone not associated with the family who resides at the home heard a gunshot, which prompted a call to 911, and responding officers discovered blood in at least two different areas of the house, which included the stairs.

The victim’s parents were not home at the time of the shooting, but several siblings — two over the age of 18 and others under 18 years old — were present inside the house at the time of the shooting, Fox11 reported.

Detectives were working to determine if the shooting would be regarded as criminal, negligent or accidental. Personnel with LAPD’s Juvenile Division also responded to the scene.
