Eight Arrested During Riverside-Area DUI Crackdown

by Contributing Editor

Eight motorists were arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs in the Riverside metropolitan area during a Christmas Day DUI crackdown, the California Highway Patrol said Thursday.

The arrests occurred during the CHP’s “maximum-enforcement period,” which began Tuesday evening and concluded about 11:55 p.m. Wednesday, according to the agency.

This year’s Christmastime maximum-enforcement period was three days shorter than last year’s, when 24 people were taken into custody for allegedly driving under the influence in the metropolitan area, which encompasses Corona, Eastvale, Jurupa Valley, Lake Mathews, Mead Valley, Moreno Valley and Perris.

There was one fatal crash during the 30-hour campaign, involving a 19-year-old man who overturned in a sedan on Interstate 215 south of Riverside, possibly while intoxicated, the CHP said. His passenger was seriously injured.

The MEP coincided with end-of-year enforcement efforts by the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department, as well as multiple municipal police agencies using saturation patrols and sobriety checkpoints to snare drunken and drug-impaired drivers.

The CHP’s next MEP is set for Tuesday night and will continue through New Year’s Day.
