CAIR Condemns Racist Graffiti Found at Temecula School

The Council on American-Islamic Relations Saturday condemned racist graffiti that targeted a student at Temecula Valley High School.
“White supremacy, xenophobia and intolerance have no place in America, especially not in institutions of learning. We stand in solidarity with targeted minorities and against the actions of bigots who violate our nation’s long-standing principles of tolerance and inclusion,” CAIR’s Los Angeles office said in a news release.
The slurs were found scrawled on the school’s gym doors Wednesday and were directed at student Solona Husband, a senior who previously spoke out against a September incident at the school involving a spray-painted Confederate flag, according to NBC4 Los Angeles. The following month, Husband created the hashtag #TVHSNeedsChange, encouraging her peers to share their stories of bullying, racism and discrimination at the school.
“To whomever wrote this, you’re only further proving my point. Temecula Valley High School is not a safe place for minorities,” Husband wrote on Twitter after she became aware of the messages.
Husband and other students later wrote anti-hate messages over one of the slurs, according to photos posted to social media.
The school has since scrubbed the hateful messages from the doors, according to a letter sent to parents and students by TVHS principal Allen Williams.
“TVHS will not tolerate any forms of hate speech, racism, or discrimination,” Williams said in the letter. “The administrative team and teachers worked closely with the victim to insure the student was supported throughout the day.”
The Riverside County Sheriff’s Department said that a teenage boy was cited for vandalism in connection with the graffiti.
