Excessive speed might have caused a suspected drunk driver to lose control of his sedan Saturday on the Golden State (5) Freeway in Santa Clarita and skid down a dirt embankment into some truck lanes, where his front-seat passenger died in a rollover crash.
The driver was taken to Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital for moderate injuries and subsequently placed under arrest, the California Highway Patrol reported.
His passenger, an unidentified man, died at the crash scene.
The crash occurred at 12:50 a.m. just north of the Antelope Valley (14) Freeway, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The motorist was going in excess of 100 mph, passing vehicles in the center divider, when the maroon Toyota Camry left the main lanes of the Golden State (5) Freeway and went down the dirt embankment into to the truck lanes, where it overturned several times and came to a rest on its wheels.
The southbound truck lanes of the 5 Freeway north of the 14 Freeway were closed until at least 4:30 a.m.
The CHP’s Newhall-area station asked anyone who witnessed the crash to call them at 661-294-5540.
