A felon charged with firing shots at Los Angeles police officers in South Los Angeles last summer pleaded no contest Monday to a weapons charge and was immediately sentenced to six years in prison.
Quamontae Smith, who was 25 when arrested, was originally charged with three counts of assault with a deadly weapon, two counts of control of an unlawful assault weapon and possession of firearm by a felon.
Officers went to 111th Street and Towne Avenue last June 25 on a report of an assault with a deadly weapon.
“Officers observed possible suspects … and gave chase on foot,” LAPD Officer Drake Madison said thent. “At least one of the suspects shot at the officers while in foot pursuit. Officers did not return fire. Fortunately, neither of the officers were struck by gunfire.”
The officers established a perimeter and detained several suspects who were identified to have been involved in the initial assault incident, Madison said. Smith was ultimately identified as the suspect who fired at pursuing officers, he said.
An AR-15 type rifle was recovered from the crime scene, along with ballistic evidence indicating that a shooting had occurred, Madison said.
