Burbank PD Receives $78,500 Grant from California Office of Traffic Safety

The Burbank Police Department has been awarded a state grant of $78,500 to help reduce traffic-related deaths and injuries, authorities said Thursday.

“This funding allows us to educate the citizens in our community and create an environment that is safe and equitable for everyone on our roadways,” said Burbank Chief of Police Scott LaChasse.

The grant was provided by the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The one-year grant for the 2021 federal fiscal year — which runs from Oct. 1, 2020 to Sept. 30, 2021 — will fund a variety of traffic safety programs, including:

— patrols and checkpoints with an emphasis on alcohol- and drug-impaired driving prevention;

— patrols with an emphasis on awareness and education of California’s hands-free cell phone law;

— patrols with an emphasis on education of traffic rights of bicyclists and pedestrians;

— patrols with an emphasis on safety and laws pertaining to motorcyclists;

— patrols with an emphasis on awareness and education of primary causes of traffic collisions, such as unsafe speed, failure to yield, failure to obey stop signs or traffic signals, improper turning movements and unsafe lane changes; and

— community education presentations on traffic safety issues such as distracted driving, DUI and bicycle and pedestrian safety.
