by Contributing Editor

An Orange County man has been charged with leaving a burning flare on the front steps of a Cerritos house while the occupants were inside, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced Thursday.

Rhett Joseph Zerboni, 35, of Fullerton, pleaded not guilty Wednesday to one count each of arson, vandalism and falsifying a registration license plate tag, according to the District Attorney’s Office.

Zerboni allegedly cut a small piece from an election sign to use to falsify his license plate tab on Feb. 20 and was confronted by the victims, then was allegedly seen leaving a burning flare on the same family’s doorstep the next day, according to the District Attorney’s Office.

He was arrested Tuesday by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department and has remained behind bars since then on $275,000 bail, jail records show.

Zerboni could face up to nine years and eight months in state prison if convicted as charged, according to the District Attorney’s Office.
