Mike Bertelsen, 25-Year Department Veteran, To Serve As Azusa Police Chief

Mike Bertelsen, a 25-year veteran of the Azusa Police Department, will take over as chief in September, it was announced Thursday.

Bertelsen, who began his career in the department as a jailer in 1994, will assume his new role on Sept. 13, a day after the retirement of Chief Steve Hunt.

Bertelsen will be sworn-in at the Azusa City Council meeting on Sept. 16.

During Bertelsen’s career, he served as a patrol officer and handled such assignments including training officer, property crimes detective, gang detective, patrol sergeant, patrol and detective lieutenant and operations captain.

Bertelsen holds an associate degree in administration of justice from Mt. San Antonio College, a bachelor’s degree in public administration from Cal Poly Pomona and a master’s degree in organizational management from Azusa Pacific University.

“This appointment to the position of chief is indeed an honor,” Bertelsen said. “Like our council and city manager, I am a strong supporter of community outreach by law enforcement.

“It is absolutely necessary for the Azusa Police Department to have strong partnerships, communication and community engagement to continue to successfully provide public safety services to the city of Azusa.”

A reception will follow Bertelsen’s swearing-in at the City Hall Courtyard.
