A 21-year-old gang member suspected of trying to carjack a Jurupa Valley motorist at gunpoint was being held Friday on $60,000 bail.
Chris Velazquez of Jurupa Valley was arrested and booked into the Robert Presley Jail in Riverside Thursday on suspicion of attempted carjacking and gang activity.
According to Riverside County sheriff’s Sgt. Nathan Padilla, anti-gang task force investigators identified Velazquez as the alleged carjacker in the July 19 attack.
About 4:30 that afternoon, the suspect approached a man parked in the 5400 block of Rutile Street, near Galena Street, and pointed a pistol at him, demanding his vehicle, Padilla alleged.
“The victim was able to escape unharmed and called 911,” he said.
After gathering evidence from the scene and from the victim, detectives identified Velazquez, he said.
“Over the course of several weeks, investigators were able to establish enough probable cause to author a search warrant for Velazquez’s residence,” Padilla said.
The warrant was served at the documented gang member’s home in the 8100 block of Jurupa Road, where he was taken into custody without a struggle.
Anyone with information was asked to contact investigators at 951-955-2734.
