Arrests Made in North Palm Springs in String of Violence

Police Sunday announced that they made five arrests in two neighborhoods in northern Palm Springs where a spate of violent crime has recently taken place.

The arrests were made Friday evening in the Santiago Sunrise Village Mobile Home Park and the Desert Highland Gateway Estates neighborhood.

According to the Palm Springs Police Department, five arrests were made in total, including a juvenile suspected of being involved in recent shootings in both neighborhoods.

“This same juvenile was found in possession of a loaded firearm that is believed to have been used in several of the reported shootings,” police said.

Another person was taken into custody for being a felon in possession of firearms, while the remaining arrests were for outstanding felony warrants from previous cases involving weapons and drug possession, police said.

All five arrestees were booked into either the Smith Correctional Facility in Banning or the Juvenile Detention Facility in Indio.

On Thursday, PSPD Chief Bryan Reyes addressed the City Council during a special meeting called in response to the violence. He said that the crimes were a result of two rival gangs clashing.

“This is not a Gateway Estates problem, this is not a 1500 East San Rafael problem: This is a city of Palm Springs problem. It can happen anywhere in our city if these two rival entities cross paths,” Reyes said.

He said since October, officers have received 85 calls for service related to shots fired in the North Palm Springs area, but that the violence has especially escalated in the last month.

Police are also investigating three murders and nine attempted murders in the area, according to Reyes.
