Compton Man Killed in Gardena Hit-and-Run

A pedestrian fatally struck by a vehicle in a hit-and-run crash in Gardena was a Compton resident, authorities said Saturday.
Ignacio Vargas was 59 years old, the coroner’s office said.
Officers responded about 5:55 p.m. Friday to a report of a man lying in the 1400 block of 130th Street, near Normandie Avenue, according to Lt. Erick Lee of the Gardena Police Department.
Vargas was not breathing when officers located him and Los Angeles County Fire Department paramedics were unable to revive him at the scene, Lee said.
A preliminary investigation determined his injuries were consistent with being struck and run over by a vehicle, Lee said.
Police did not have a description of a suspect vehicle and asked anyone who witnessed the crash to call Investigator Jose Zamudio at 310-217- 6189.
