A murder charge is expected to be filed Tuesday against a 20-year-old man whose alleged accomplice in a Desert Hot Springs residential break-in was fatally shot by an occupant of the targeted home.

Nathan Michael Alger of Desert Hot Springs was arrested last Thursday in Palm Springs and booked on suspicion of murder at the Smith Correctional Facility in Banning, where he remains in custody without bail.

Alger is one of two men suspected in a home invasion last Wednesday at a home in the 13700 block of Hacienda Heights Drive that turned deadly when an occupant opened fire, killing Alger’s alleged accomplice, according to Desert Hot Springs Deputy Chief Steven Shaw.

Officers were sent about 10:40 p.m. to the Hacienda Heights Drive address in response to a reported shooting and found the victim, whose name has not been released, suffering from at least one gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Alger was subsequently pinpointed as a suspect in the home invasion through unspecified means and was arrested in Palm Springs about 9 p.m. Thursday, jail records show.

Shaw said the occupant of the home who gunned down the suspected intruder is not expected to be charged, although he said the investigation was ongoing.

Alger has no documented felony convictions in Riverside County, court records show.
