DUI Patrols Planned Over Week of Thanksgiving in Desert Hot Springs

Additional police officers will be deployed this week in Desert Hot Springs to be on the lookout for motorists driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs during the Thanksgiving holiday period.

“We want everyone to enjoy the holidays and be safe when they must travel,” Desert Hot Springs police Chief Jim Henson said. “Taking simple safety measures like driving sober, following the speed limit and wearing a seatbelt helps keep yourself and others safe.”

The police department did not disclose any planned checkpoints slated for the holiday, but did say the increased patrols set for the city will begin Wednesday and wrap up Sunday.

Drivers taking prescription drugs, particularly those with labeled warnings about driving or operating machinery, may also become impaired enough to get a DUI. Marijuana can also be an impairment, especially in combination with alcohol or other drugs, police said.

DUI arrests can lead to jail time and cost motorists up to $13,500, with fines, fees, classes, license suspension and other expenses factored in, according to police.
