A suspect allegedly shot at multiple officers during a wild vehicle pursuit in Hemet, though no one was injured, police said Saturday.
It started when an officer spotted a red Toyota Solara near him at about 5:40 p.m. Friday and recognized the driver as the suspect in a prior shooting in Hemet, according to the Hemet Police Department.
When the officer tried to pull the car over, the suspect hit the gas and sped westbound on Domenigoni Parkway toward Winchester Road before shooting a handgun in the direction of the pursuing officer, Lt. Nate Miller said.
“The officer’s police car was struck by gunfire, but the officer was not hit or injured,” he said.
The pursuit continued into the unincorporated community of Winchester, where the suspect allegedly also shot at a California Highway Patrol officer who was stopped alongside of the road.
Miller said the CHP officer was not hit by the gunfire but that at least one bullet hit the officer’s patrol vehicle.
“Neither the Hemet Police officer nor the California Highway Patrol officer returned fire at the suspect in the speeding vehicle,” Miller said.
Officers continued to trail the suspect and a helicopter from the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department began tracking the suspect’s car from above.
The suspect fired at officers several more times but did not hit anyone while traveling near the area of State Route 74 and Juniper Flatts Road, where he came to a stop, tossed his gun onto the dirt and surrendered, police said.
Jonathan Kyler Nunn, 25, of Idyllwild was arrested and booked into the Larry D. Smith Correctional Center on suspicion of two counts of attempted murder of peace officers.
His bail amount has yet to be set and he remained behind bars Saturday.
Charges related to the prior shooting have not yet been filed because the investigation is ongoing, according to Miller.
A woman who was in the car with Nunn during the pursuit was also detained, authorities said.
“The investigation into the adult female’s involvement in this case is still ongoing at the time of this release,” Miller said.
As authorities converged on the scene where Nunn surrendered, a Hemet police vehicle and a Toyota Camry crashed nearby at State Route 74 and Warren Road, but no one was injured, according to Miller.
