Woman Pleads No Contest to Fatally Stabbing Her Father

A Pomona woman was sentenced Wednesday to 17 years in state prison after pleading no contest to fatally stabbing her 58-year-old father.
Gardenia Guzman, now 31, pleaded no contest to one count of voluntary manslaughter in connection with the Jan. 25, 2019, killing of Jaime Hernandez Guzman, according to Ricardo Santiago of the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office.
Officers found the man with a single stab wound to his upper body when they responded that day to an unknown disturbance in the 200 block of West Grove Avenue, Pomona police said shortly after the crime was discovered.
“Life-saving measures were initiated. However, the victim succumbed to his injuries inside the apartment,” Pomona Police Department Sgt. Jon Edson said soon afterward.
Following a lengthy probe, homicide investigators identified Gardenia Guzman as the suspected stabber. Investigators believed that Guzman and her father had been involved in an argument and that she grabbed a knife at one point and stabbed her father.
An arrest warrant was issued for her, but her whereabouts had been unknown until May 2019, when members of the Major Crimes Task Force contacted a group of people, including Gardenia Guzman, at the corner of Mission Blvd and Reservoir Street.
She has remained behind bars since then, jail records show.
